Everself & Harvard Study: ESG Helps Patients Continue Losing Weight After Stopping GLP-1 Medications
Everself and Harvard research found ESG helped patients maintain and continue weight loss after stopping GLP-1 medications.

This is one of the most common questions we hear from patients.
While GLP-1 medications have transformed obesity treatment, many individuals eventually discontinue therapy due to side effects, cost, insurance coverage, or personal preference. The challenge is what comes next.
Using real-world data from Everself and Harvard Medical School, a new study led by Everself co-founder and Harvard Medical School faculty member Dr. Pichamol Jirapinyo evaluated patients who discontinued GLP-1 therapy and pursued one of three strategies:
➡️ Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), a non-surgical weight loss procedure
➡️ Switching to another GLP-1 medication
➡️ Lifestyle modification alone
The results were notable:
• ESG was associated with ~17% additional total weight loss at 12 months
• Switching from one GLP-1 medication to another was associated with ~5% total weight loss
• Lifestyle modification alone resulted in minimal weight gain
The key takeaway: discontinuing a GLP-1 medication does not mean patients are out of options.
Obesity is a chronic disease, and long-term success often requires an individualized treatment plan and, in many cases, a sequential approach that combines or transitions between different therapies over time.
