GLP-1 medications work — while you're on them. Published follow-up from the STEP 1 trial showed participants regained the majority of their weight loss within a year of stopping semaglutide.

The gastric balloon is a different model: a 6-month treatment paired with a 12-month support program that builds the eating habits that hold after the balloon is removed. How long does the gastric balloon stay in?
Six months. The soft, saline-filled gastric balloon is placed through the mouth in about 30 minutes under anesthesia, then removed endoscopically the same way at the 6-month mark. Your 12-month Everself support program continues for another 6 months after balloon removal.
Is the gastric balloon procedure reversible?
Yes — completely reversible. Your physician can remove the gastric balloon at any time before the 6-month mark if needed. Unlike bariatric surgery, the balloon doesn't permanently alter your stomach anatomy.
Is the gastric balloon safe? What are the side effects?
Orbera® has been FDA-approved since 2015 and is used in 70+ countries with more than 400,000 procedures performed. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramping in the first 1–3 days as your body adjusts; about 90% of patients see these resolve within the first week. Serious complications (balloon migration, deflation) are rare — published rates are under 1%. Everself provides anti-nausea medications, complimentary IV hydration the day after, and 24/7 clinical on-call support to manage the adjustment period.
Will I gain the weight back after the balloon is removed?
The 12-month support program is built around the months after removal — that's where habits hold or don't. Published data shows about 10% average total body weight loss maintained at 12 months (6 months after removal). If more weight loss is needed, you can step up to ESG stomach tightening with the same care team rather than starting over.
How much weight can I lose with the gastric balloon?
Average outcomes are around 10–15% total body weight loss over the 6-month treatment period — about 25–40 lbs for most patients. Outcomes are strongest for patients who fully engage the 12-month support program (dietitian, behavioral coach, daily smart-scale data). The balloon creates restriction; the program teaches the eating patterns that keep weight off after the balloon is removed.
Am I a candidate for the gastric balloon? Who isn't?
The gastric balloon is FDA-cleared for adults with a BMI of about 30 to 40 who haven't achieved lasting weight loss through diet and exercise. You may not be a candidate if you've had previous gastric surgery (sleeve, bypass), have a large hiatal hernia, or have inflammatory bowel disease, severe heart or lung disease, or are pregnant. A consultation with your Everself physician confirms eligibility — most patients in the 30–40 BMI range qualify.
What is recovery like after the gastric balloon procedure?
You go home the same day. Everself provides complimentary IV hydration the day after your procedure to help you recover faster. Most patients take 2–3 days off before returning to work, following a full-liquid plan, then a soft diet (oatmeal, bananas), then regular eating over the first 2–3 weeks.
How does the gastric balloon compare to ESG stomach tightening?
Both are non-surgical, endoscopic, outpatient procedures. The gastric balloon is temporary (6 months in, then removed) and produces ~10–15% total body weight loss — a great option for patients targeting a 25–40 lb loss or who want a shorter commitment. ESG places permanent internal sutures that tighten the stomach and produces ~15–20% TBWL with durable 5-year results — typically the better fit for patients with more weight to lose or who want a one-time procedure. Many Everself patients start with the balloon and step up to ESG if they want deeper results.
Can I combine the gastric balloon with a GLP-1 medication?
Many patients combine the gastric balloon with a GLP-1 like Ozempic, Wegovy, or compounded semaglutide to get extra weight loss on top of what they'd see with medication alone. Everself includes GLP-1 medication management in your balloon package at no extra charge — we handle timing and prescriptions through your dedicated physician. (Medications themselves are not included in the procedure price.)
